Sweden: Mothers continue night patrols against anti-social behaviour
A group of mothers continue to have night watch patrols on the streets of Rogsved, a Stockholm suburb, in an attempt to maintain the peace and protect the neighbourhood from local gangs and rowdy youth, as seen on footage from Thursday. The night watch patrols have been taking place for almost a year now. Hailing from different backgrounds in an area heavily populated by migrants, some of the mothers in the night watch are distinguished by their hijabs and headscarves. "Because people are from different cities and... they all in a sense identified with the fact that they all are immigrants even if we are from different countries originally. And I think that gives a stronger bond between people," said Brouk Worku, one of the organisers of the night watch. The night watch, which takes place every Friday, usually follows a briefing with local police and security personnel, lasting about two hours. "Yes, the youth act better towards us than they do towards the police. The police are intimidating to them, so ...

Chile: Police deploy tear gas and water cannons amid heavy clashes with protesters
Thousands of people took to the streets of Santiago on Friday, marking the 50th day of antigovernment protests with clashes and scuffles. Masked activists armed with Molotov cocktails were on the front-line, facing the riot police deploying tear gas and water cannons. Protesters shouted slogans, started a fire in the middle of central Plaza Italia and played the drums. Some activists walked with national flags with a drawn closed eye and banners calling on the authorities to stop the excessive use of tear gas, as they were enraged after the latest report of Chilean National Institute of Human Rights indicated 352 activists had suffered eye injuries since the beginning of the unrest in October. The protests were triggered by a now-withdrawn increase in subway fares. Social discontent has been fuelled by frustration with President Sebastian Pinera's policies and growing inequality.

Breaking Dat! Twitter sensation Chinese strongman chugs beer 'tornado' style
Pangzai, a 33-year-old strong man from a village of Xingtai in Hebei Province became a sensation on the Internet for his unusual strength. He has uploaded videos showing his capabilities of breaking bricks and bottles with bare hands. One of his most popular skills is chugging a bottle of beer in one go after spinning it into a tornado. Footage shot on Friday shows how he breaks beer bottles with one strike and how he splits bricks with his bare hands with a karate-like movement. "The reason why I have great strength is that I did farm work in the village since I was a child. When collecting wheat, I loaded and unloaded 50 kg by myself. After leaving school, I began to work on a construction site for several years. The construction site strengthened me a lot," the strongman said. Pangzai says he has around 500,000 followers in total, over 100,000 of them being foreign with his most popular video having been viewed 3 million times.

Haiti: Clashes as protesters slam US backing of President during top envoy visit
Police clashed with hundreds of protesters as they marched to the US embassy in Port-au-Prince during the visit by Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs David Hale on Friday. Police used live ammunition, rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse the crowds. Protesters set tyres on fire and threw rocks and other objects at security forces. "Today we are protesting [and marching] to the US Embassy to send a clear message calling for them to remove [president] Jovenel Moise from power because it is them who got him elected," said a protester. Haiti has been crippled by protests since September, over demands for the president to step down over a corruption scandal.
