More than two decades in the making, a new apple variety called the Cosmic Crisp has started shipping to retailers across the country. The new variety of the fruit was developed by researchers at Washington State University, who describe it as a tasty and long-lasting cross between the disease-resistant Enterprise and Honeycrisp apples.
The Cosmic Crisp -- a super-sweet variety of apple named for its bright yellowish dots on the skin that look like cosmic stars -- is expected to hit grocery stores in the U.S. this week, and comes after two decades of development and three years of planting apple trees.
