Melbourne is likely to have just experienced its coolest summer in at least 15 years. While Australia as a whole had one of its three hottest summers on record based on maximum temperatures, some southern parts of the country had a mild summer by modern standards.

We have a cooler change for some places on Saturday, like Canterbury, but by Sunday high pressure smothers the country and by Monday hotter, more humid northerlies will spread across both islands making for warmer than average weather.
An absolutely enormous area of high pressure is stuck out to NZ's east and will help encourage more humidity into parts of the country, as will a sub-tropical northerly flow developing this weekend and into next week.

The nights are getting longer, the mornings cooler - but the afternoons are still hot, in fact hotter than average in the days ahead as high pressure smothers NZ. Many places will have highs in the mid to late 20s, some will reach 30 degrees. After some cooler nights we also see temperatures creeping up overnight over the next few days.
