An accused in the Walayar rape and death case of two minor dalit sisters was on Saturday thrashed by a group of people following an altercation, police said. M Madhu, the third accused in the case, who was acquitted recently, allegedly got into an argument with the group near his house, the police said. "The group allegedly called him (Madhu) a rapist when he came to his house from Coimbatore. The man used some vulgar expressions, words and picked up a fight with the locals following which he was thrashed," Palakkad police chief told PTI. However, Madhu's mother told the media that the attackers were from Sangh Parivar, he said. The accused has been admitted to the district hospital in Palakkad. The police official further said a case has been registered against four people. "We have also taken three of them into custody. The probe is on," police said. Five held in Thane, drugs worth Rs 62.81 lakh seized

The Thane Police arrested five men and seized narcotic drugs worth Rs 62.81 lakh from their possession over the last three weeks, an official said on Saturday. Additional Commissioner of Police Pravin Pawar said the seized drugs included 1,063 LSD papers and small quantities of mephedrone and charas. Salman Shaikh (28), Sanjeev alias Paul Ramadyaya Chouhan (27), Nitin Lamsure (33), Sushant Rasal (32) and Prem Iyer were arrested by the anti-narcotics cell of city police, he said. The police also seized Rs 98,000 in cash. Acting on a tip-off, ANC sleuths arrested Salman and Sanjeev from Upvan area on November 19, Pawar said. Their interrogation led to further arrests over the next two weeks, he added. A huge stock of LSD papers was seized from Iyer, the police officer said. All five were booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act and further probe was on, Pawar added.

A city engineer and his wife are among the 18 Indians who have been kidnapped by pirates near the western coast of Nigeria earlier this week.Vijay Tiwari, who is an engineer with Merchant Navy, and his wife Anju were kidnapped by pirates when they were onboard a Hong Kong-flagged vessel on December 3, his family said."Vijay's company informed us that he had been kidnapped. They said they were trying to rescue them but then nothing happened. After that, we contacted the media and the district magistrate," SP Udhadhyay, a family member said.Speaking to ANI, ASP Praful Thakur said that Tiwari was employed with a shipping company in Nigeria, and added that the administration was working for his early rescue."We are taking this matter very seriously. Higher authorities are ensuring assistance to the family. The SSP has spoken to the family members. Law minister urges CJI to ensure mechanism to monitor quick disposal of rape cases

The minister said there are 704 fast-track courts for heinous offences and others and the government is in the process of setting up 1,123 dedicated courts for POCSO and rape offences. "In the law relating to women violence, we have already laid down capital punishment and other severe punishment including completion of trial in two months time," he added.

58.8pc voting in J'khand till 3 pm amid violence, 1 killed

One person was killed as security personnel opened fire on assailants who police claimed tried to snatch their arms outside a polling booth in Jharkhand, where 58.82 per cent votes were cast till 3 pm in the second phase of assembly elections in 20 constituencies. The voting commenced at 7 am amid tight security arrangements, they said. Lawyers at the Mhow court premises here on Saturday attempted to thrash an accused who was brought to the court in connection with a hearing in a rape case with a minor girl.As seen in a video from the court's premises, the accused person's face was covered with a black cloth by the police personnel who covered him while trying to rescue him from the clutches of the angry lawyers.Ankit, who is accused of the rape and murder of a four-year-old child in Indore district, was attacked by the angry lawyers while leaving the court after hearing.The accused was taken on remand for three days by the police following his arrest.
